Mandatory Military Service in Korea- Will your favorite Korean Actors be Affected?

Have you heard about the mandatory military service in Korea? Every country has distinctly imposed a law for the welfare of the country and the benefits of its citizen. There are several countries that mandate the compulsory or voluntary military service, which covers their entire men population.

Some of these countries that enacted military service include Afghanistan, Albania, Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, North Korea, South Korea, Lebanon, and others.  In South Korea, a compulsory military service is legislated.

The compulsory military service or mandatory military service is one of the laws passed in South Korea covering all its citizens. The present conscription or mandatory military service, which is legislated in 1965, in South Korea is applied as mandatory to male citizens with 18 to 35 age. But women citizens are also allowed to enlist in Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. The Military Power Administration administered this law.

 The Military Service Periods

The mandatory military training service in South Korea recently has the longest duration of military training period worldwide.  This is divided into two service categories which are:

  • Non- active military service
  • Active military service duty

 The Military Service’s Length

The length of Korea’s mandatory military service depends on the type of military duty that is fulfilled by a Korean male citizen. Below are the service duration according to military service branches.

  • Public service worker (non-active duty) - service ranging from 24 months up to 36 months
  • Civil Service (non-active duty) - service ranging from 24 months up to 36 months
  • Marine Corps and Army- military service for 21 months
  • Air force -- military service for 24 months
  • Navy- military service for 23 months

What happens after the mandatory training?

After male Koreans have completed the military training or service, their name will be placed on the reserve list or roster automatically.  They are also required to attend military training for few days yearly within six years.

The Mandatory Service Examination

A Korean citizen is required to undergo physical medical diagnosis or exam to identify if he’s fitted or not for the mandatory training service. After that, they will be graded accordingly. Grades one to three means normal. Other grade levels are listed below:

  • Grade Four-- required undergoing alternative service such as being a civil worker
  • Grade Five-- Categorized in civil defense in times of peace
  • Grade Six—Korean Men are exempted from mandatory military service
  • Grade Seven- Re-checkup after 2 years

Since the military service imposed on South Korea is mandatory for all men, except those with exemptions, this means that regardless of the state of life or status, everyone is required to be covered by this legislation. If Korean men already reach the legal age, whether they’re prominent actors or ordinary citizen, they are required to enlist in mandatory military services.

Many of you will surely be worried regarding the famous personalities who will soon be enlisted in South Korea’s mandatory military service.  Anyway, Lee Min Ho is a South Korean superstar.
